2019 San Mateo County Poetry Out Loud Contest

On February 8, 2019, the Arts Commission help the county’s first annual Poetry Out Loud Contest. Nicole Perez and Sanchitha Kannabran were named the 2019 San Mateo Poetry Out Loud Champion and Runner Up, respectively.  Congratulations to them both!

A senior at Jefferson High School in Daly City, Nicole recited “ Zacuanpalalotls,” by Brenda Cárdenas. Nicole states, “poetry impacts my life because it lets an individual express every thought and emotion about a situation or event that has affected them negatively or positively. Poetry also allows an individual to speak about current issues relevant today by allowing their audience to be informed about important issues such as racism and the environment.” Nicole will advance to the California State Poetry Out Loud State Finals in Sacramento on March 10-11, 2019. She plans on attending community college in the Fall.

Sanchitha Kannabran, a freshman at San Mateo High School, Sanchitha recited “Black Boys Play the Classics” by Toi Derricotte. She has studied Indian Classical Vocal since she was 6 years old. She also volunteers for her community through a service club called Interact Club at school the Youth Activities Council of San Mateo. She states, “Poetry Out Loud exposed me to different kinds of literature and gave me chance to perform in front of others which will help me overcome my stage fright.”

HOW IT WORKED

All students participated in after-school and weekend sessions where they learned the art of recitation and presentation, the tricks of using literary devices, and various poetic terms. Most sessions ended with a writing activity lead by Teaching Artist Tobey Kaplan. San Mateo County Poet Laureates Caroline Goodwin (2013-2016) and Lisa Rosenberg (2016-2018) coached students individually to prepare for tonight’s contest.
