Office of Community Affairs

What does “community” mean to you? To the Office of Community Affairs (OCA) it means everything. Our services and projects are all designed with one thing in mind - - those who live in our community. Through our civic engagement, we make sure we capture your voice to understand how to inform their strategies.  Community Affairs is a division of the County Manager’s Office, serving as a liaison between County departments and the community to facilitate information sharing, feedback, provide immigrant services to residents. Whether that’s through public art and beautification projects, immigrant integration support, Census 2020 and community engagement / meetings, we make sure that our residents have the information and resources to understand the latest initiatives from our office and an opportunity to provide input.

Immigrant Services

Not knowing where to turn for help as an immigrant can be scary. Finding an immigration lawyer, housing, a job and learning the language are among the many challenges that immigrants face in our community. The County of San Mateo Office of Community Affairs, or OCA, is your first stop to find help. OCA is in touch with all of the services and resources available to our valued immigrant community.

Community Engagement

San Mateo County residents know firsthand what is most important to a thriving community. When everyone in the community works together, we can ensure changes we make are in line with the needs and desires of the people who live, work and play in San Mateo County. We encourage you to engage with us – stay up to date on events and happenings through our announcements, sign up for volunteer opportunities, report safety and beautification issues and familiarize yourself with our public art projects, as an artist or art lover.

Census 2020

San Mateo County is getting ready for Census 2020 by working with community organizations and leaders across the county to make sure there is a complete and accurate count of every resident living in our county. The Census Team worked diligently to ensure that every housing unit receives a survey in Census 2020, and as a first step, we submitted an updated mailing address file to the U.S. Census Bureau. This process, called the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) is the only opportunity for local jurisdictions to review and update the Census’ master address information. In the coming months, we will form committees and work groups to plan Census 2020 efforts in our county. As we get closer to 2020, we will create community action teams to conduct outreach and support residents in participating in the census. All efforts will be grounded in research, guided by best practice, and driven by cutting edge data analytics to ensure that efforts are targeted, impactful, and cost-effective.

Special Projects

Office of Community Affairs oversees some of San Mateo County’s special projects like the Census 2020, North Fair Oaks community plan, the Middlefield Road Redesign project and rezoning within the community.
