The County of San Mateo is home to one of the best government websites in the nation. 

Government Technology and e.Republic's Center for Digital Government announced this week the winners of the 2014 Best of the Web awards with the County of San Mateo making the list of finalists for best county website.

“It's a great honor to be among the counties that are leading the way in providing residents and businesses easier access to government online,” said Beverly Thames, Content and Collaboration Manager for the San Mateo County Information Services Department. “We are inspired and challenged to work even harder so we can put San Mateo County in the top five next year."

In three categories -- state, city and county -- nearly 300 government websites were judged. In its 19th year, the annual Best of the Web awards recognize city, county and state governments for outstanding portals and websites based on innovation, functionality, productivity and performance. 

This year’s first-place Best of the West winners are the District of Columbia, taking first place for the third time since 2003; Oakland County, Mich., a first-place winner also in 2008; and the State of Hawaii, a first-time first-place winner in the state category.

The County of San Mateo’s website,, is recognized as a finalist in the county category for using an open source platform for its new responsive, accessible website, utilizing features intended to maintain a unified look while allowing flexibility for individual departments.

“I attribute our success to the dedication of my team and to the goals we set for mobile-first design, improving search and increasing visitor engagement," said Thames. 

The County of San Mateo shares the Best of the Web distinction with other finalists in the county category:

The 2014 Best of the Web awards is a joint project of Government Technology and e.Republic's Center for Digital Government, which highlights the public sector's evolving capabilities on the Web.
